Sherly (Introduction to Sculpture, 2023)
Sherly used this course as an opportunity to build three dimensional elements to add to the whimsical atmosphere of her Experimental & Documentary Arts MFA thesis installation.
Amal (Advanced Visual Practice, 2023)
Amal developed a storyboard and used it as a visual aid to pitch the concept for a graphic novel. I helped her quickly condense a complex idea she was still working on fleshing out, and in the end, her clear and compelling presentation of her concept impressed the whole class.
Elayna (Advanced Visual Practice, 2023)
Elayna started out making small ink drawings, but when I saw the source materials she was using as inspiration, I suggested that she play around with them in Photoshop. After I demonstrated some tools for image manipulation, she decided to focus on creating a body of digital collage work for her capstone presentation.
Esther (Advanced Visual Practice, 2023)
This capstone project started out with a few pieces of electronic scraps Esther wanted to incorporate into a dress she was working on. I encouraged her to scavenge for more scraps to develop her aesthetic. Her final presentation involved presenting an assemblage and giving a brief talk about her vision for a futuristic style of apparel that uses recycled technology.
Georgie (Advanced Visual Practice, 2023)
Georgie used this class to explore the potential of Blender and Unreal Engine for generating expressive, naturalistic scenes. Her final presentation involved monitors displaying the current stage of her work, as well as printed images and notes describing her process in clear, accessible terms.
Kate (Advanced Visual Practice, 2023)
Kate’s capstone presentation ventured into the realm of expanded cinema, with her own 16mm film footage projected with archival video through multiple translucent fabrics intentionally sourced from a local, queer textile producer. To further demonstrate her concept for a documentary about farms as queer spaces, she also featured her development notebook as part of the exhibit.
Kristiana (Advanced Visual Practice, 2023)
Kristiana used this course to create a personal catalog of photographs of architectural details on Duke's campus. I encouraged her to experiment with them in Photoshop, and she decided to present two collage pieces for her capstone project.
Ruby (Advanced Visual Practice, 2023)
This started out as a simple practice in which Ruby would carefully wrap sticks in different types of fabric. After she had several of these, she started bundling them, and the piece began to resemble a tree. Ruby expressed an interest in incorporating a literary component that helped root viewers in the contemplative nature of her process. After I suggested incorporating digital projection, she produced an animated text collage and projected it onto her sculpture.
Rei (Creative Video Production, 2024)

Rei had no prior experience with video production, so she took this Creative Video Production continuing education class to learn the basics. She produced this video to demonstrate not only her love for cats, but also her ability to source archival material and use Premiere to edit video, add text, and apply effects.
Rita (Creative Video Production, 2024)

Rita began with a broad topic suited for a feature documentary, drawing on her years in Mexico, and thousands of photos from her sustainable agriculture work there. She aimed to create a concise, engaging video accessible to the local community of El Fuerte. Working together, we crafted a timeline, and with no prior experience, she put together this video, which she plans to continue to work on outside of the Creative Video Production continuing education class where she started it.
